Brett didn’t know. His wife didn’t either. No one knew that Brett’s time was up. Only God. On May 6, 2009, Brett fell to his death.

At the time, he was working atop the ACS building in downtown Dallas. While wiring a security camera, he slipped and fell off the roof, twelve stories down. The news of his death spread like wildfire among those who use to work with him. So, it wasn’t long before that news reached me. On the day that he fell off the roof, Brett adamantly refused to have a helper with him. His pride convinced him that all other electricians would just “get in the way.”

Consequently, there was no one there to catch him when he slipped

In today’s society, how did we lose a taste for humble pie? Will God overlook our pride?

I believe that there are 3 reasons why we should avoid pride at all costs!

First Reason: We become Public Enemy #1

But when his heart and mind were puffed up with arrogance, he was brought down…and stripped…” (Daniel 5:20, NLT)

Recently, a friend of mine called me and mentioned that he wanted to be the greatest evangelist in town. He told me that he’d been watching other evangelists in hopes of surpassing their ministry. He also said that he wouldn’t stop until he’s “number one.”

I was so grieved by those remarks that I became, basically, speechless for the rest of our conversation. After our phone call ended, I felt obligated to pray for him. According to God’s Word, this young man will get his wish. He will be “number one” – but, unfortunately, it’ll be “public enemy number one.”

You see, when you and I strive to exalt ourselves we become direct enemies of a Holy God. God would have to violate His holiness before allowing our prideful hearts to go unpunished. “What sorrow awaits the proud city…for the Lord will send a mighty army against it…and smash it to the ground” (Isaiah 28:1,2, NLT)

Second Reason: Every good and perfect gift is from above

“…What do you have that you did not receive” (1 Cor. 4:7, NLT).

The Bible says that we have no basis for boasting because every good gift we have (talents, health, careers, etc) is solely a result of God’s grace. Kanye West has a  song with Beyonce where he raps about his EGO( with sinful innuendos included). In this song, he lyrically worships himself for having rhyming skills and being able to pack a stadium. But a few years ago, Kanye couldn’t even speak, let alone rap. In 2002, he was in a tragic car accident that fractured his jaw, requiring his mouth to be wired shut.

However, the God of all creation allowed his mouth to heal, his recording to resume and his career to thrive. Yet, Kanye continues to live a life of self-worship.

Friend, are you guilty of the same sin? Do you take pride in the things that God has given to you? (beauty, talents, authority, etc) Have you exchanged the worship of the “man on the cross” for the “man in the mirror? If so, you have truly forgotten the grace of God:(

Third Reason: Pride doesn’t reflect the mind of Christ

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who being in the form of God…humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death…” (Phillipians 2:5-7, NLT)

Kirk Franklin said in a recent interview with a prominent Christian mag that his “swagger” is at 100%. He pretty much was saying that he walks around with a necessary amount of arrogance. But, does this reflect the mind of CHRIST? No Way!! Where was Jesus’ “swagger” when he rode into Jerusalem on a donkey? What percentage of “swagger” did Jesus have when he took off his outer clothes and got down on his knees to wash his disciples’ feet?

“…so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist…and began to wash his disciples’ feet” (John 13:4,5, NIV).

Family of God, Christ walked in humility. Let’s do the same and give Him glory. He deserves it. The Word confirms it. Let’s obey.
