Secret Service

Several years ago, a world renowned pastor from Fort Worth, Texas, announced to his congregation that he was gonna use a private plane and his ministry’s funds to bring aid/ relief to the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

This pastor made a big deal out of this act of charity.

  • He constantly reminded his church members of his plans to serve the poor, even calling his endeavor, “ANGEL FLIGHT 44.”
  • He had the details of this plan published in a Christian magazine  with a full-page ad
  • And, if that wasn’t enough arrogance, His ministry also had a book written about “Angel Flight 44”, detailing his humanitarian efforts

WOW…talk about tooting your own horn!

Is this the example that Christ set for us? Does Jesus want us to issue press releases whenever we do charitable deeds? Is it okay to have books, magazine articles or Facebook posts, detailing our religious service?

Surely, if anyone had the right to boast of good works, it was Christ, right?

But let’s find out from God’s word how our LORD feels about this subject.

“Therefore, when you do a charitable deed , do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly” (Matthew 6: 2-4)

hmm..I guess that pretty much clears it. This passage reveals the kind of service that  our God is pleased with. The service that God desires is…

  1. The kind that doesn’t succeed an announcement

2. The kind that anticipates an audience from heaven…not earth

3. The kind that remembers that TRUE love is without the parade.

(…”love does not parade itself…” 1 Corinth. 13:4)

In essence, He loves the kind of service that’s…secret

Christ added at the end of verse 4 that God the Father rewards his humble servants OPENLY.

So, ironic isn’t it?

Many religious folk parade themselves around after doing a charitable deed so that their peers would see them and be impressed.

But, the very attention that these people pursue… is given as a reward to the humble servants of God!

“…and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly” (Matthew 6:4, bold lettering mine)

So, as always, it’s best to obey God and do things His way.
